I'm not sure there is anything better than the Jerry Garcia Band doing Deal.
It never fails.
Got nominations for the Dead's best Deal?
OR do you agree with me that the Garcia Band owns that tune?

For consistent quality, JGB no doubt. For the occasional powerhouse I gotta go with GD.

I prefer JGB versions of this song too, as well as most songs Jerry played with JGB and the Grateful Dead. One of my favorites is 1981-11-06 at the Capitol Theater. Jerry always played great at that venue.

As for Dead versions, there's an abundance of outstanding ones as well. My favorites always change but here's some that are definitely worth listening to:

This '71 version is a unique and fantastic version with a slowed down tempo that sounds nothing like any Deal I've heard. Jerry being in peak form helps too.

monster version:

very tight performance. One of the best 80's shows.

beautiful early version. entire show is sublime.

Deal is usually a set closer for both bands in the latter years. Either one is good enough for me as long as the rest of the set flows into the finale...

I can't comment on the JGB, I'm not really sure what the JGB is?

But here is a fairly recent thread on Grateful Dead performances of Deal...

thanks Cliff -- I figured this has been covered before. I will check this thread out. But in the meantime, looks like we need to get you going on some heavy Jerry Garcia Band listening.

I dunno about that...

I'm not much a fan of the JGB and I very seldom listen to that stuff.

Did get to see the JGB a few times in some small venues during the 80's, and I particularly enjoyed a matinee at the Lunt Fontain on Broadway back in 1987. But this music really doesnt do that much for me. I'll stick with the Grateful Dead...

I haven't heard much, either, actually. I have a few shows -- Jerry with Grisman, a couple other nice ones from over the years -- but don't know JGB well at all. Sad but true.

If I have to listen to Deal, JGB hands down.
Sometimes a good Day Job beats Deal as a set closer.

How on earth can a good Day Job compete? Really now!
I've never heard/felt the air turn into pure snap-crackle-poppin electricity during Day Job. Deal, on the other hand -- my goodness!
Or am I really uninformed? Did the boys rip the roof off with a Day Job? Is there some sizzling Day Job out there I am unaware of? I will listen......

As it happens, I have a clip of Micah presenting this very request to the Guardians of All Things Properly Deadhead.

Micah: "Please sir, I want some more Day Job."

"WhaaaaaAAAAAAT?"

Micah: "Please sir, I want some .......... Day Job?"

"DAY JOB?!?!?!?!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlJugdk4OGc&;NR=1

Micah, Micah, never before has a Deadhead wanted Day Job instead of Deal! Watch out. There's a dark, thin, winding stairway without any bannister ...

They stopped playing DJ before I was able to hear it live, so maybe that has a lot to do with it.
It does make me laugh when I hear it though.

D & I hope you are well.

thanks! I'm hanging in there.
I caught a bunch of Day Jobs in my era -- including the last 4/4/86, which was the last show of east coast spring tour. I was so dang tired, I honestly don't remember it -- but as I go back and listen now just out of curiousity -- it's pretty peppy.

great thread! i have to agree with some others that JGB's performances were consistently solid. But when the GD cranked out a Deal with the "X factor," there could be no comparison.

Kezar Stadium! I used to live three blocks away from there. The only other time the Dead played Kezar is one of my absolute favorites -- the SNACK Benefit -- if you don't already love this short but sweet show, check it out:

There are times when I want to listen to the Dead and times when I prefer to listen to JGB (I guess many here feel the same way), but regardless of my mood at the time this is still my favourite Deal. http://www.archive.org/details/gd1981-03-28.fm.hajo.franka.85958.flac16 and looking at the link Cliff posted it would appear that I am consistent (or stuck in a rut).

Honestly I think the GD did it better. Obviously I'm in the minority. I think Weir is the X factor. He really drives a lot of the great deals and when I listen to the Jerry band I miss his sound. Here is a great example of Weir on probably my fav version of Deal. It's in 2 parts

ah ... maybe a minority, but I agree with you. I love Deal, I love JGB, and I also think there's a number of tunes JGG did better than the Dead. This isn't one of them.

It's tough comparing the JGB to The Dead because they are so different; the obvious similarity are the lead guitarist & vocalist and some of the song selections, that's it.

Melvin, the Gals, John Kahn, David Kemper etc. have a unique sound and styling of their own. Great Band! As did many of Jerry's previous collaboration's.

Great Dead Deals?
